Head Volleyball Coach, Todd Caughlin
Todd Caughlin is in his ninth season as St. Mary’s head volleyball coach. He has overseen the program as it made the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, and kept the team among the top programs in the Heartland Conference and the South Central Region.
In 2008, Caughlin brought in one of his best recruiting classes, including Kristen Chapman and Sondra Cui (who both started as freshmen), Katelyn Kershner (who started in her first season with the team) and Adrianna Keys and Stephanie Proske (who will be major parts of the Rattlers success in the future).
In 2006, he took a team that had just one returning starter and led them to within a game of the South Central Region Tournament, falling in the finals of the Heartland Conference Tournament. Along the way, the Rattlers rallied from two games to none down to defeat number two seed Dallas Baptist University. They also posted impressive wins over the University of Central Oklahoma, the University of Alaska at Anchorage and Texas A&M University-Commerce.
During his eight years with the team, the Rattlers have posted a winning record five times, including two 20-win seasons. He has a 134-128 record at St. Mary’s and a 163-147 overall record.
Twenty-three Rattlers have been honored as All-Heartland Conference during his time. Three have earned Freshman of the Year honors and two have been named Libero of the Year. In 2006, Samantha Weber became the first Rattler to earn NCAA Division II All-American honors in volleyball.
His teams have been known as much for their work in the classroom as their work on the court. Five times in the last seven years, St. Mary’s has been awarded the prestigious American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for student-athlete academic excellence. The award honors teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during the school year.
The 2007-2008 St. Mary’s squad posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.46. In the 2003-2004 academic year, the Rattlers earned the AVCA Team Academic Award while posting the best team GPA in NCAA Division II.
In addition to his responsibilities as head coach at St. Mary’s, Caughlin is also the school’s NCAA compliance officer and assistant athletics director.
Prior to his time at St. Mary’s, he was the assistant coach at Lone Star Conference school Cameron University, where he helped lead the Aggies to their first Lone Star Conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies appeared in the conference championship game all four of his years at the school.
Caughlin was head coach at Lethbridge College in Alberta, Canada, where he led the men’s squad to its first-ever conference championship appearance and its first national ranking (12th) in his four-year tenure. His first coaching job was as an assistant at Red Deer College, also in Alberta, Canada, where he helped lead the team to the national tournament both years he was there and to a runner-up finish in the 1990 Canadian National Tournament.
Caughlin is a native of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. He attended Lethbridge Community College and Red Deer College, competing in volleyball at both schools. He received his Bachelor of Applied Studies degree in 1996 at Athabasca University, Alberta, Canada. He later obtained his master of science degree in psychology from Cameron, Lawton, Okla. in 2000.
Assistant Volleyball Coach, Brad Bulycz
Brad Bulycz is in his eighth season as the assistant volleyball coach at St. Mary’s University.
During his time with the Rattlers, Bulycz has helped St. Mary’s become one of the top teams year-in and year-out in the Heartland Conference.
The Rattlers have won 115 games during his time in San Antonio and have produced 20 All-Heartland Conference selections, as well as one All-American pick. St. Mary’s has advanced to the Heartland Conference postseason tournament five of the seven years Bulycz has been on staff. Rattler teams have also advanced to the Heartland semifinals four times with Bulycz serving as assistant coach.
In addition to his duties as assistant volleyball coach, Bulycz is the assistant director of compliance for the St. Mary’s Athletics Department. He also served as the head coach for the Rattler men’s and women’s tennis programs for five years. During his time as the tennis coach, the Rattlers produced nine All-Heartland Conference players and the 2005 Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year, Hayley Harris.
Bulycz joined the Rattler coaching staff in May 2002 after one year as an assistant coach at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. Bulycz served as a camp instructor for the Aggie Volleyball Camps in Lawton, each of the prior two summers before joining the CU staff.
Bulycz served as head coach of the Lethbridge Community College men’s volleyball team in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, from 1997-2001. In 2000, he guided the Kodiaks to a fifth-place finish in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs and the team’s highest-ever conference ranking.
Bulycz also played two seasons at Lethbridge, helping the team to it’s first-ever appearance in the ACAC playoffs in the 1995-96 season. During the 1996-1997 season, he served as an assistant coach with the Kodiaks under current Rattler skipper Todd Caughlin, who was the Lethbridge head coach at the time.
Bulycz is a native of Picture Butte, Alberta, Canada. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Mary’s in 2004. He also received his masters degree in industrial/organizational psychology at St. Mary’s in 2007.
Student Assistant Volleyball Coach, Valerie Teter

Teter finished her Rattler career in 2008 as one of the top defensive players in school history. For her career she played in 117 matches, totaling 1688 digs, the second highest total in school history. Her average of 4.13 digs per game is the highest total in St. Mary’s history. She also totaled 118 service aces, which also ranks second. She was named Heartland Conference Libero of the Week twice during her time with the Rattlers.
As impressive off the court as she was on, Teter was named to the Heartland Conference President’s or Commissioner’s Honor Roll each of her four years with the Rattlers.
Teter is a San Antonio native. She attended Ronald Reagan High School prior to coming to St. Mary’s. She earned All-Defensive Team honors and was a member of the Honor Roll and National Honor Society. She is scheduled to graduate this December with a B.A. in marketing.
